Rehabilitation

following Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

or Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)

Omahanui Special Care Unit has a contract with ACC to provide Active Rehabilitation for people who have an accident or severe injury.

We work with a dedicated and enthusiastic team of allied health professionals – a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech language therapist and neuro psychologist. All staff at the unit are specifically trained to work effectively in the area of head injury and undergo training throughout the year.

Professor Barry Willer of the University of Buffalo acts as our mentor and visits with us, and the families of our residents/participants on a 1-2 yearly programme.

We work closely with families as part of our team and meet on a regular basis to discuss progress and planning for our residents.

As part of the physio programme we go to the gym and swimming pool. All participants enjoy this, and it also provides an opportunity for them to meet new people.

Once our participants are ready to return to their homes our care givers continue to visit them in their homes to ensure continued care and to help with further rehabilitation.
